Communication

1. the act or process of communicating; fact of being communicated.
2. the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs.
3. something imparted, interchanged, or transmitted.
4. a document or message imparting news, views, information, etc.
5. passage, or an opportunity or means of passage, between places.

Based on the recipient of a conversation, there are two types of communication, intrapersonal communication and interpersonal communication. Intrapersonal communication is a communication within an individual. On the other hand, interpersonal communication happens between two or more people.

There are some basic principles of interpersonal communication:
1. It is not optional.
Everyone needs to communicate. We can't escape from it however we want to. Maybe we can try to escape from verbal communication but we still do non-verbal communication (body-posture, gesture, eye-contact, etc).

2. It is irreversible.
Once we say something, we can't take it back. We may regret it, but it doesn't change anything. Those words has come out and left an impact.

3. It is complicated.
Communication is not simple. There are many variables in it, such as language, environment, individuals involved, etc. Those variables have impact on how the messages are sent, received, and interpreted. Two different persons may have different interpretation of a message. They could have misunderstood what the message really meant.

4. It is contextual.
All communication has context, such as: psychological context, relational context, situational context, environmental context, and cultural context. These could affect the communication. In example when we're talking in a crowded and noisy place, we sometimes even have to raise our volume and it will be less effective.

We can improve our interpersonal communication by developing some skills such as:
a. Learn to listen.
b. Choose our words.
c. Understand why communication fails.
d. Relax.
e. Clarify.
f. Be positive.
g. Empathize.
h. Understand stress.
i. Learn to be assertive.
j. Reflect and improve.
k. Negotiate.
l. Working in groups.

Nowadays most people communicate via texts or internet. But I still think that it's important to do face-to-face communication. So let's try to learn more about interpersonal communication cause it's going to be very useful in our life! :)
